The granddaughter of legendary University of Oklahoma basketball coach Billy Tubbs is recovering after a crash Thursday along the Kilpatrick Turnpike.

Katie Tubbs, 23, was driving a 2004 Toyota 4Runner westbound near Eastern Avenue when her vehicle left the road, struck a tree and overturned. She was ejected from the vehicle. Tubbs was taken to OU Medical Center in good condition with head and internal injuries.

Robert Bombah is one of the motorists who came to the aid of Katie after her car overturned several times, and burst into flames, says he’s praying for her.  Bombach owns a local medical supply company, and was driving home Thursday, when he saw aftermath of the fiery wreck.

He and other motorists scrambled into action to stabilize Katie, and put out the fire.

Last Friday, Nick Rappa, a good friend of Bombach was riding his motorcycle on I-35, when he was run over and killed by a suspected drunk hit and run driver, who is also a local cardiologist.

“Losing a friend this week, I needed to make sure that whoever it was, there was already help that she was already taken care of,” Bombach said.  W

While OHP reported that Katie  was admitted to OU Medical Center Thursday night in “Good” condition, with “trunk and head injuries,” Friday, OU Medical Center told News 9, they have no record she is still there.

Billy Tubbs, led the Oklahoma basketball program from 1980-1994.
