A rising sprint racing star from Newcastle is devastated after her helmet and gear was stolen this week.
At 14-years-old, Abbi Buntin is continuing her family’s racing legacy.
Onlookers can always tell which driver Buntin is, thanks to her customized helmet honoring her late uncle.
“My uncle passed away a couple years ago and my helmet was customized, because it had his name and stuff on it,” Buntin said.
However, Buntin says overnight Wednesday, a thief took that helmet and racing gear right out of her father's truck.
“I woke up one morning and got told everything was gone,” Buntin said.
The thief took her helmet and bag of racing gear, right in the middle of her busy competition season, she said.
A security camera captured images of a potential suspect, and Buntin’s family said their neighbors were targeted as well.
The racing gear was worth thousands, but for Buntin, it’s priceless.
“Hopefully I get to race, and I want my helmet back,” Buntin said.
Anyone with information on the theft can contact the Newcastle Police Department.
