The Yukon Police Department recently received new ballistic vests thanks to a flood of community support.
Police Chief John Corn said the vests protect the officers from large caliber rifles.
The Yukon Rotary Club took on the fundraising for the vests as a project and within days, received donations and pledges for more than $13,000 toward vests for police officers and the fire department.
“It meant a lot to each one of my guys to have that kind of support coming without any solicitation from us,” Corn said.
All 46 police officers will carry the vests in their patrol cars while on duty. And at least 16 vests will go to firefighters to carry on their vehicles. Chief Corn said firefighters will now be able to treat patients in an active scene while stay protected with the vests.
The vests were sold at a reduced cost by Armor Advantage, owned by an Oklahoma who has made it his mission to get first responders all over the world the protection they need.
