It's essential to take proactive steps to fireproof your home and property, reducing risk and ensuring the safety of your loved ones and belongings. Here are some tips to prevent damage to your home during wildfire season:

Create a Defensible Space Around Your Home

Establishing a defensible space is crucial in reducing wildfire risk. According to Oklahoma Forestry Services, you should "remove all flammable vegetation within 30 feet of structures" and "reduce small-diameter surface fuels" around your property to create a safer zone. This includes trimming trees, clearing debris, and keeping grass short to reduce the chance of fire spreading toward your home.

Maintain Your Property Regularly

Regular maintenance reduces fire hazards. The National Interagency Fire Center advises homeowners to clean roof surfaces and gutters regularly to avoid accumulation of flammable materials such as pine needles, leaves, and branches.

Install Ember-Resistant Vents

Embers can enter your home through vents, igniting fires from within. Installing ember-resistant vents is a crucial step in protecting your home. The National Interagency Fire Center suggests installing 1/8-inch metal mesh screening to reduce embers from entering vents.

Prune Trees and Maintain Landscaping

Proper landscaping can act as a barrier to wildfires. The National Interagency Fire Center recommends removing low-hanging branches from trees to a height of 15 feet to eliminate ladder fuels, which allow fire to climb from the ground into the tree canopy.

Store Firewood and Other Combustibles Safely

Keeping combustibles away from your home reduces fire risk. The National Interagency Fire Center advises that all combustibles such as firewood, picnic tables, boats, etc., should be kept away from structures.

Water Your Yard Regularly

Keeping your lawn and plants hydrated can help reduce the risk of fires spreading near your home, as dry vegetation is much more susceptible to catching fire. Watering your yard is a simple, effective measure to help keep your property safer during wildfire season.

Keep Grass Green and Moist

Watering your lawn regularly helps keep the grass green and less likely to dry out and become a fire hazard. Oklahoma Forestry Services suggests "keeping grass shorter than 4 inches" and ensuring that it remains green to reduce fire risk. Grass that is well-maintained and hydrated is less likely to catch fire quickly.

Maintain Moisture in Flower Beds and Shrubs

Keeping flowers, bushes, and shrubs well-watered can help prevent them from drying out and becoming a source of fuel for wildfires. The National Interagency Fire Center advises homeowners to "water plants deeply and regularly to ensure they stay hydrated, especially during droughts and hot weather." This moisture helps plants become less susceptible to wildfires.

Watering Can Act as a Firebreak

A well-watered yard can also act as a temporary firebreak. "When watering your yard, consider focusing on the areas closest to the home and along fences," advises Oklahoma Forestry Services. This moisture creates a barrier that helps slow or prevent the spread of fire from reaching your property.

Watering During Drought Conditions

In Oklahoma, drought conditions can significantly increase wildfire risk. Keeping your lawn and vegetation hydrated during these dry spells is essential. The Oklahoma State University Extension recommends keeping an eye on local drought conditions and adjusting your watering habits accordingly to keep your plants healthy and your home protected.

Develop a Wildfire Evacuation Plan

Having a well-thought-out evacuation plan is crucial for family safety during a wildfire. Identify multiple evacuation routes and establish a meeting point for all family members. Ensure everyone knows the plan and practices it regularly.

By implementing these measures, you can significantly reduce the risk of wildfire damage to your home and ensure the safety of your family during Oklahoma’s wildfire season.
