Yukon audit: City leaders commit to implementing change

Over a month since an audit of the City of Yukon uncovered decades of leadership failures, financial mismanagement, and employee misconduct, city leaders say they are attempting to begin anew.

Yukon Mayor Brian Pillmore says the new focus is all about turning a new page in the city.

Pillmore says the immediate changes are drastic, as the city government is committed to taking action.

How have Yukon residents reacted?

Immediately following the audit, the Yukon City Council passed a 154-point resolution to be implemented this year.

In the last month, Pillmore says many residents have voiced concerns, and his office has received a few whistleblower complaints, which he says is always healthy as they work to investigate.

What is the city doing to change?

One of the immediate fixes, Pillmore said, is reinstating the employee concern hotline.

Pillmore says change is not an instantaneous thing, but the city is committed to fixing it.

"This reflects on the city as a whole," Pillmore said. "We have great people who work here every day and do the right things, so a few bad apples shouldn't spoil the whole bunch."

With the issues uncovered in the audit, the city says it has made referrals and turned over all information to county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.

The reason for the turnover, the city says, is to show the days of secrecy, mismanagement, and unchecked power are gone.

Applications have since been opened for a new position the city is hiring, a financial director.

Pillmore says residents are welcome to speak with him or Yukon City Council members about their concerns.

Pillmore also said the city will strengthen governance practices with mandatory training for council members on April 15.
