Oklahoma City is preparing for its first bond election since 2017 when residents approved all the ballot propositions and initiatives under the branding of "Better Streets, Safer City."
In 2025, city officials expect to set a date for the next bond election.
"We've been collecting data for years on what should be in the bond election," said city spokesperson Kristy Yager. "We start putting all of that together and we, and we start asking people what they think."
Recently, Oklahoma City maintained its ranking as the 20th largest city in the country. Expansion and growth has pushed the city to think of the next round of improvements needed in the city. More than half of the 2017 bond funds went toward streets, while the remainder funded several other projects including police, fire, and improvements for the current downtown arena.
"Streets is our number one concern that residents talk about in our annual survey," Yager said.
The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Committee recently announced Oklahoma City is set to host Canoe Slalom and Softball in 2028, which will bring further traffic into the area.
"We have to have constant improvements and we have to have money to do that. And this is how we do it through a bond election," Yager said.
No date has been set yet for the election. Right now, the city says it is in the outreach process and plans to start asking residents for input by the end of this summer.
