Tornado Flips Hydro Mobile Home With Couple Inside

News 9 meteorologists always warn folks living in mobile homes to seek shelter elsewhere.

A couple who lives east of Hydro says they felt it all as the home flipped over with them inside. "I cannot believe that we’re standing here to tell the tale," Heather Sherman said.

“We thought you know it was all north of us so we didn't seek shelter."

She and her husband Cole were caught in the one place you don't want to be: a mobile home. “This is where our house was, and that is now where our house is, or what's left of it at least,” Heather said.

They were inside the home when strong winds picked it up and flipped it over. “And then I was definitely airborne and there was debris flying all around," she said.

Heather and her husband hung on for dear life. “It was just so scary my adrenaline was pumping I just wanted to get to my husband to make sure he was okay," Heather said.

Despite the destruction, Heather and Cole only have a few cuts. “It's unreal, really,” she said. "Not many people make it out of a mobile home."

“Absolutely they were extremely lucky. I mean, it could've been a whole lot worse," Hydro Fire Chief Ben Slagell said.

He says the Sherman's home is the worst of the damage.

As for the rest of Hydro, it’s mostly just cleanup and repairs for downed trees and power lines.

And the Shermans say they're going to rebuild their property with one key addition. “Yeah that'll probably be the first thing we do before the house goes up the shelter's going in," Heather said.

Truly a best-case scenario story, but still a great reminder to have a plan in place and stay weather aware.
