If you live in Tulsa, you likely know about Turkey Mountain. As a popular hiking destination, Tulsa Urban Wilderness Coalition holds Trail Work Days to help maintain the area.
“Turkey is really one of a kind,” said Bobby Reese with the Tulsa Urban Wilderness Coalition.
There’s a lot to choose from, you can take a hike or jog along the trails. For David Walker, mountain biking is his favorite activity to do here.
“I’m an adrenaline junkie,” he said.
But to ride safely, you have to have a well-maintained course. So, Walker is trading his bike for some tools. He’s volunteering with the Tulsa Urban Wilderness Coalition for a Trail Work Day, which Reese says aims to preserve nature while also sustaining the safety of the park.
“Today at Turkey, we’re going to tackle some erosion issues, some trail maintenance, litter cleanup,” said Reese.
Walker’s crew is doing erosion control on one of his favorite trails to ride: Boomtown.
“If you see, there’s getting ruts that are running down the trail and we’ve been fixing it over the last year and a half, we’re just gonna line this whole area so it’s safer,” said Walker.
The volunteers are armed with rakes and shovels, as well as a passion for the outdoors.
“We’re able to really, with the volunteer effort, knock out in the short four hours, really a two-day job,” Reese said.
Both men say it's because of behind the scenes work like this that Turkey Mountain remains a treasure of Tulsa.
