On Monday, Governor Kevin Stitt announced the creation of a new statewide taskforce focused on artificial intelligence. As part of his executive order, the 11-person team will develop a report before the end of the year which will guide state officials on when to use or not use AI-powered tools.
William Kerber, the CEO and founder of Human Mode, said Stitt's decision is a positive reflection of the advancements in AI.
"You can use it to analyze medical diagnostic imagery, to detect cancers," he said. "You can use it to analyze crop data, to improve yields to feed people. So, it has these life-saving opportunities, but it also does carry some risks, like most technologies."
Kerber's company has been researching and innovating in the AI world since 2018. Many things have changed since then, and he said a lot more products and services fueled by the technology are starting to reach consumers. But, the rapid growth warrants the attention of decision makers.
“I think in the risks in the near-term, you see things like cloning, deep-fakes, these sorts of things – where we don’t necessarily know who is on the other end because all of our conversations are digital. We could have conversations with people that we believe are someone of authority or someone that we trust that are not.”
As proof to the new technology, Kerber's team created a 3D AI-infused model of News 9's Matt McCabe in a matter of minutes. That technology might one day be available for folks using 3D virtual reality social media platforms.
The chair of the state's new task force will also be able to appoint 3 at-large members from relevant backgrounds, in addition to designees from other state agencies and officials.
