Tulsa Hosting American Kennel Club's National Agility Championship

Four legged competitors are arriving in Tulsa to compete in the National Agility Championship this weekend. It's through the American Kennel Club.

More than 1,200 dogs from 47 states and four countries are competing in Tulsa this weekend. The dogs and their handlers are vying for the title of AKC National Agility Champion.

This weekend, Ford Truck Arena at Expo Square will turn into an agility course.

The championship location changes each year and Tulsa is the only city in regular rotation.

"This championship is our top competition for the year. The dogs have worked all year to be able to compete here. So, we're coming here to crown our national champions for 2023,” said AKC Director of Agility Carrie De Young.

De Young says the challenges include see-saws, running through tunnels, climbing over A-frames, jumping, and weaving through poles.

The competition features several different breeds, but De Young says popular breeds in the agility world include Border Collies, Shelties and Golden Retrievers.

"These dogs are amazing. We've got a variety of pieces of equipment that they need to perform. They need to run the course as it's designed by the judge, and they have to be the fastest dog out there that doesn't make any mistakes,” De Young said.

The championship kicks off Friday morning and continues through the weekend.
