Major Improvements Underway At Turkey Mountain Trails

Exploring the trails at Turkey Mountain is a popular way to enjoy the Oklahoma outdoors for a lot of people. A multi-million-dollar renovation is happening at the trails now.

Turkey Mountain project manager, Ryan Howell, said the renovations mean mountain bikers and hikers will now have their own specific trails.

More than 200,000 people come from all over to enjoy the trails of Turkey Mountain per year.

In total, there will be 40 miles of hiking trials added and eventually there will be plenty of room for everyone to enjoy the trials.

"You'll have a lot more accessibility, people will be able to ride more mountain bikes, if you have mobility issues a lot of the trails will be open to you now," Howell said.

Howell said the trails can be rocky, eroded and difficult to navigate, but after the renovations, there will be trails for everyone.

"We have divided our project into five different phases of construction," Howell said.

They have completed 12 miles of multi-use trails and are currently working on phase two, where they are building downhill trails that will attract mountain bikers.

Eric Bailey said he is on Turkey Mountain regularly and likes exploring old and new trails.

"It's exciting, you hear the equipment around while you’re riding, and you get to peek over and see what’s to come and eventually the ropes will drop and you get to ride it," Bailey said.

Howell said RiverParks Authority staff asks people to not explore trials under construction with hopes of keeping everyone safe.

"We do ask if a user comes across a trail closed ahead sign, they retrace their steps and find a different route around," Howell said.

RiverParks Authority staff said during construction, the old trails will stay open so people can still come out and exercise.
