Tens of thousands of people took to their streets across the country to demand stronger gun laws on Saturday.
The first March for Our Lives was in 2018 after a mass school shooting in Parkland, Florida. One of the 400 rallies was right here in Oklahoma City.
Advocates rallied at the capitol demanding change. They said enough is enough and they want to see stricter gun laws put in place.
Lucia Perry said she's been fighting for change in gun safety legislation for over twenty years. The cause hits close to home for her after her teenage cousin was killed in New York.
“He was with a group of other kids from his junior high and they were coming home from a little league game and this man shot five of them,” Perry said.
Perry said her cousin was one of two kids that didn't make it.
“My cousin was bleeding, dying on the street. It's just that, oh god, it's just awful,” Perry said.
Perry along with folks from all over Oklahoma stood in solidarity with those who have come face to face with the barrel of a gun.
“It's scary to know that my grandma can't go to the grocery store to get milk and eggs. It's fearful to know I can't go to school, my little sister can't go to school, their friends are scared to go to school,” Alasia Smith said.
Tony Tee said it's time to make a difference.
“Our point is, what are we waiting on? Are we waiting on it to happen here because if we're waiting on it to happen here it's going to happen here,” Tee said.
Tee and others said change starts not only in ourselves but with those we vote into office. Protestors want lawmakers to look into passing bills that would change the legal age to get a gun and put more requirements in place to get a firearm.
“Prayers and thoughts are absolutely great, but policy and change is what we're here to enforce to demand of those in power,” Tee said.
”The gun control movement is all about saving other people's lives and the gun rights movement is all about selfishness,” Perry said.
Governor Kevin Stitt’s office said it is not planning to amend the call for a special session schedule starting Monday. They plan to address eliminating the grocery sales tax and reducing personal income tax.
