The Norman Police officer who shot a suspect during an altercation early Sunday morning has now been identified.

In a release issued to the press Monday afternoon, police identified Master Police Officer Heather Glazier as the officer who shot 34-year-old Martin Sanchez-Juarez on Dec. 14.

According to police, at about 11:30 a.m. a family member called the department to report that Sanchez-Juarez, was out of control and “breaking stuff.”

Glazier arrived on the scene and saw Sanchez-Juarez walking in the 1300 block of 24th Ave. SW. Preliminary information indicates that Sanchez-Juarez refused to comply with Glazier's commands to drop the hammer he was carrying.

Police said Sanchez-Juarez continued to walk towards the officer, who then took cover behind the police car. The officer said the suspect continued to approach her and knocked the driver's side mirror off the police car with the hammer. That's when Glazier fired her weapon.

Based on witness statements and physical evidence, investigators determined that Sanchez-Juarez was shot three times.

Sanchez-Juarez remains in critical condition at the OU Medical Center.

Glazier remains on paid administrative assignment pending the completion of the investigation. She has served with the department since May 2008 and is a graduate of the 45th police academy.
