So what was accomplished Wednesday in Washington? Was it a pointless circus? Not to me.

Wednesday was perhaps the greatest example I've ever seen of the age-old decree every father has passed down to his son. "If you mess up, tell me the truth. It'll be much worse if you continue to lie."

The one man who came out of the Clemens-McNamee Congressional Hearing riding the white horse was Andy Pettitte. Andy Pettitte?!? The guy who admitted he did the deed. We know he did it, and yet he was carried around on the shoulders of Congress like a World Series Champion. Why? Because he told the truth. Within 48 hours of the Mitchell Report, Pettitte said "I did it." We love that. Americans love that. And as we found out Wednesday, Congress loves that. Clemens, however, apparently continues to pile lie on top of lie. He's in too deep now. His reputation and career are tarnished forever.

There were no ground-breaking peace treaties signed Wednesday. But I don't think it was the most pointless day in Capitol Hill history. There was one lesson that came shining through the pile of syringes and bloody gauze and butt bandaides....the truth shall set you free.
