When news isn't news

Behind every newscast is a day full of adventures and events that always come close to making it on-air, but fall just short for one reason or another.

The perfect example is what happened as soon as I sat down at my desk today to write this blog.    It was a police chase that really wasn't a chase.  Make sense?

It started when we heard Oklahoma City police officers telling dispatchers they were attempting to pull over the driver of a truck.  Police followed the man who wasn't exactly running from the cops, but he wasn't stopping either.

We launched SkyNews 9 HD and notified the producers that we may have a chase.

A small group of us gathered at the desk to watch the monitor routed to the chopper's camera.   "We're almost there.  We're about to be up on it", said Pilot Mason Dunn.

We waited.  The camera started zooming in the direction of the chase.  And then .....  nothing!

The man in the truck pulled over as soon as our chopper arrived in the area.

We watched and giggled a little when we saw the elderly man step out of the truck and wobble to the back of it.  It was fairly obvious (at least in my opinion) that he was a little intoxicated.

That was it.  No story.  No news.  Just another up on the up-and-down adrenaline roller coaster we all ride here in the newsroom when it comes to breaking news.. or in this case, not-so-breaking news.
