If you missed the NEWS 9 food drive you can still help out by leaving food by your mailbox Saturday morning.

Postal carriers across the metro will pick up the food on their regular routes.

Every year the food you donate to the mail carrier food drive helps thousands of hungry Oklahomans. And with food and gas prices on the rise the need is even greater.

Mail carrier Brenda Rockwell sees it all from those who have a lot to those who don't. That's why she's leaving everyone on her route a little more in the mailbox.

The plastic bags are for the postal carriers annual food drive. Generous Oklahomans can fill the bag with non-perishable food and leave it by the mailbox to be picked up Saturday morning.

"The amazing thing is the poorer sections we seem to get more food there than we do in some of the other sections," Bob Bearden with the National Association of Letter Carriers said.

"I guess they feel that if they need, there's got to be somebody else out there that's worse off," Rockwell said.

The donated items go to the regional food bank. The goods you leave by the mailbox will keep the shelves stocked during the summer months and help feed hungry mouths.

"We do this because one in five Oklahoman Children are in danger every night of going to bed hungry," Bearden said.

And this year, because of high gas prices and rising food costs, you may be helping someone who is in need for the first time.
