OKLAHOMA CITY -- Another scam has surfaced which uses the Oklahoma City Thunder to target unsuspecting victims.
Since the team's arrival to the metro, there have been at least two scams associated with the basketball team's name, although the team had no ties to the cons.
The team worked to clear its name, making sure fans and residents know they had nothing to do with stealing identities or money from people.
"We want people to know we are in no way associated with this. It's a scam," said Thunder spokesperson Dan Mahoney. "Beware and don't believe it.
According to Oklahoma City Police, the person running the scam claimed to be associated with the Thunder and said they are willing to pay off a person's utility bills for them as long as the person pays them half the money up front and half later. The scam has already victimized some.
"The Thunder is an NBA team and by throwing the name around might add some legitimacy to their claim," said Msgt. Gary Knight. "If something sounds too good to be true, you should treat it that way. It probably is too good to be true. "
The Thunder sell tickets and say it isn't entirely uncommon for their ticket sales team to contact people by phone.
