OKLAHOMA CITY -- Watching the NBA playoffs it's been quite interesting to hear the various integrations of supposed nicknames for Oklahoma City.
I don't blame the game announcers, I ask you does Oklahoma City really have a nickname? I've heard them call us OKE-City, but have you ever heard anyone from OKE-City call it that? Just sounds kind of hickish to me. Seattle Sonics fan probably call us that.
Okie City is worse, pilots and flight attendants seem to like that one, I hate it, although strangely I don't mind being called an Okie.
OKAY City harkens back to those underwhelming license tags our cars wore for years. "Oklahoma is OK," that's a ringing endorsement. Visit Oklahoma, it's OK.
Remember the push, maybe it was more like a nudge, to label Oklahoma City the "Big Friendly?" Don't remember it? I thought it was kind of catchy, but apparently not catchy enough.
So, I guess we're stuck with OKC, it's not very original, but can we at least agree that it's not objectionable.
So, the next time you're deplaning politely tell that Chicago-based flight crew it's not Okie City, just OKC thank you.
