Former Sooner Lee Roy Selmon Dies

Selmon played for the Sooners in the 1970s and was inducted into both the College Football and Pro Football Hall of Fame.

TAMPA BAY, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released a statement Sunday confirming that former Oklahoma great and NFL Hall of Fame defensive end Lee Roy Selmon died at the age of 56.

Selmon suffered a major stroke Friday and was admitted to St. Joseph's Hospital soon after. He spent the last two days in the hospital.

Selmon's restaurant partners released a press statement shortly after his stroke Friday saying he had passed away, but that was determined to be premature.

Selmon played for the Sooners from 1972-1975 and finished his college career with 335 tackles and 40 sacks. He was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1976 NFL Draft and was the first player ever selected by the Buccaneers, who were an expansion team at the time.

Selmon went to six consecutive Pro Bowls and was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1979. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1988 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1995.

The Tampa Tribune reported that a memorial service will take place in Tampa Bay, and Selmon's body will be flown to Oklahoma for burial.
