A fire at a vacant house near Sooner and Reno in Midwest City forced families in nearby homes to evacuate for a short time early Monday morning.

Just before 3 a.m., a neighbor spotted the flames at the house in the 6000 block of S.E. 3rd Street. Because no one had lived in the house since 2006, firefighters focused on putting out the fire instead of saving the house.

At one point, strong winds began blowing embers from the fire. As a precaution, firefighters evacuated three or four neighboring homes. The fire was out by 5 a.m. and residents were allowed back into their homes.

No one was hurt and only the one house was damaged.

Fire investigators waited until daylight to search for clues as to what started the fire.
