A startling discovery after an Edmond Public Works street crew stumbled across a small meth operation along Coffee Creek Road Thursday.

The "shake and bake" operation was found just East of Interstate 35 and neighbors in the area were outraged. Edmond Police say these smaller labs work by mixing different chemicals together inside something as small as a soda bottle.

"I'm horrified. I can't imagine having a meth lab just down the street," said Kim Ashman, who lives in a neighborhood nearby. "I don't think these people are really, they don't care about their neighbors. They don't care about children in the area. I think their goal in life is to make their drugs and sell their drugs and other people are just objects."

The small meth lab prompted a HAZMAT response from the Edmond Fire Department. A police spokeswoman said the chemicals used in these meth operations can explode if they are handle improperly.

"I walk with my neighbors and with recycle days a lot of the buckets will have recycle blow out and so we pick up trash on a regular basis, just being neighborly, to keep our own areas clean, keep our neighborhood looking nice and so it's very scary to think that we could have picked up something dangerous," said Ashman.

According to national statistics from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) there were 678 recorded meth operations in Oklahoma alone. This small shake and bake meth lab is the 9th recorded meth operation in Edmond since 2000. Neighbors near the Edmond bust say one is too many.

Police say if you do stumble upon something that looks suspicious, leave it alone. While they can be small, the "shake and bake" meth cookers can be very dangerous.

So far police don't have a suspect in this case.
