Oklahoma basketball player Isaiah Cousins suffered a gunshot wound on Tuesday night in Mount Vernon, N.Y. when an errant bullet struck him in the back of the shoulder.

The bullet came from a gun fight between warring street gangs in Mount Vernon, Cousins' home town.

Mount Vernon Police Commissioner Terrance Raynor said Cousins is expected to survive but wasn't sure how the injury would affect his career going forward.

"I've spoken to Isaiah and he is doing well," OU coach Lon Kruger said in a statement. "It truly was a matter of him being in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was simply talking to some friends when an outsider fired a shot. Everyone we've spoken to said they don't believe anyone in his group was a target. The bullet struck him in the back of the shoulder and doctors are not planning surgery. He should be healed in a few weeks and begin summer activities with the rest of the team in June. We're very thankful it wasn't worse than it was."

Cousins will be a junior at Oklahoma in the fall. He started every game in the 2013-14 season, averaging 11 points and 4.2 rebounds per game while shooting 40.4 percent from 3-point range.
