Fresh off of tossing his first career no-hitter, Mid-America Christian University freshman pitcher Junior Obeso has earned the Sooner Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week award, the league announced today (Apr. 11).
Obeso’s no-hitter is just the Evangels' second since joining the NAIA and the first since the 2009 season (Thomas Peabody).
“Everything was working great and Dylan (Queen) and I executed pitches well,” Obeso said. “Our offense and defense was phenomenal."
Obeso was sharp throughout, never letting the ball out of the infield and striking out eight with no walks in his seven innings of work.
The no-hitter helped the Evangels romp Central Christian College 13-0 in the rubber game of the series on Saturday (Apr. 9).
“We had a great game plan going in to pitch them aggressively inside because those guys like the ball around the plate, so we were going to try and jam them,” MACU head coach Adrian Savedra said. “Junior hit his spots and our defense did the rest. Great individual performance and great team effort.”
The Dover, Okla. native now leads the starting pitching staff in wins (five), earned-run-average (3.74) and strikeouts (51).
Obeso and the Evangels will next play at Oklahoma Baptist University tomorrow evening (Apr. 12) at 6 p.m. in Shawnee, Okla.
