Former Oklahoma City mayor Kirk Humphreys is responding to calls he should resign his position on the University of Oklahoma Board of Regents.

That isn't the only position he is being asked to leave. That position is his place on the board at John Rex Charter Elementary.

The chair of the Oklahoma City Public School Board is calling for Humphreys to step down, saying Humphreys' comments have no place in the district and that we should hold leaders to a higher standard.

As for his OU Board of Regents position, Humphreys said he has no plans to step down.

Calls for his resignation were sparked after he made controversial and homophobic remarks on a political show last Sunday. He has since apologized.

Protesters pressured the regents at Tuesday's meeting to take action but it's unclear if they can do anything at all because regents are appointed by the governor.

In a statement, Gov. Mary Fallin did not echo calls for Humphreys to resign, but did call his comments regrettable and unfortunate. She said his views don't  represent her own.

She added, "Regent Humphreys has apologized, and it is time to move forward."

Humphreys is set to lead the OU Board of Regents next year. Regents could take some kind of disciplinary action against Humphreys at their next meeting, but it appears it would fall short of expelling him from his post. The next meeting is January 24.
