Fueling Oklahoma to a road win over No. 3 Wichita State on Saturday, the freshman duo of guard Trae Young and forward Brady Manek swept the Big 12’s weekly awards for the week of December 11-17. Young earned Big 12 Player of the Week for the third time this season while Manek was honored as Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
By claiming both honors, Oklahoma is the first school to earn Big 12 Player of the Week and Big 12 Newcomer of the Week in the same week since Texas on Dec. 14, 2015. The Sooners last swept the conference’s weekly awards on Feb. 16, 2009, with Blake Griffin (Player of the Week) and Willie Warren (Newcomer).
The pair of rookies combined for 50 points and nine 3-pointers to lead Oklahoma to a 91-83 win at No. 3 Wichita State (OU’s only game this past week). No. 3 Wichita State is the highest-ranked non-conference team Oklahoma has ever beaten on the road in men’s basketball and OU's first road win over any top-three team since 1949.
Young produced 29 points, 10 assists and four rebounds, continuing his seven-game streak of scoring at least 28 points a game. His double-double performance made him the first college player with 25 points and 10 assists against an AP top-three team since Syracuse’s Jonny Flynn in 2009 against UConn during the classic six-overtime game.
The Norman native continues to lead the nation in scoring with 28.8 points per game while ranking third in assists at 8.9 dimes per contest. Young has now earned a Big 12 weekly honor in five of his first six weeks in the conference.
A 6-9 forward from Harrah, Okla., Manek earned the first Big 12 honor of his career by scoring a career-high 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting in his first road game as a Sooner. He added two rebounds and a block in 30 minutes of action. Manek scored 16 points in the first half against the Shockers – equaling his previous career-high.
OU is back home for its final two games before Big 12 play begins, starting with a Tuesday contest against Northwestern State at 6 p.m.
