Oklahoma county leaders could take another step forward Thursday to separate the sheriff's office from the county jail.

The new jail trust is supposed to take over day-to-day operations of the jail, but the deadlines Sheriff P.D. Taylor gave for the switch has come and gone.

Thursday the Oklahoma County Budget Board could start the process of separating the sheriff's office and the jail. The group will consider a lease for a new space for the sheriff's office, the Krowse Building near Northeast 36th Street and North Martin Luther King Avenue. It would cost more than $77,000 and would be effective until the end of the fiscal year in June.

News 9 asked a spokesperson with the sheriff's office about the change of power and they said progress is being made, including jail and law enforcement employees getting a raise and the trust hiring a CEO and other staff.

Just last week, members of the trust and county commissioners butted heads with the Sheriff's Office over past spending, but that's the most recent action reported.

The budget board will consider the next step, a new home for the sheriff's office at 10 a.m.
