Oklahoma will get at least $1.25 billion in COVID-19 relief funding from the federal government.
Just like every other state, Oklahoma gets a chunk of the massive $2.2 trillion federal relief package. It will have to be used specifically in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the Journal Record, Senator James Lankford says money from the CARES Act isn't just a blank check for anything.
For example states and cities can use the money to plug holes in budgets, but only if the shortages were caused by the coronavirus .If the state can prove it, diverted money for the pandemic response will be reimbursable.
The Senator says the CARES Act and more than a billion dollars heading to Oklahoma is important for short term relief for businesses and employees.
The Senator said in quote, "The focus was really to keep people employed. to keep employers and employees connected."
Senator Lankford says he will be working with the Oklahoma Secretary of Commerce to help small businesses to understand how to use all the resources available to them under the CARES Act, including the Paycheck Protection Program. The grant program will help to businesses with less than 500 employees.
