Stroud Community Shaken After Man Accused In His Parents' Murder
STROUD, Oklahoma - A Stroud man is accused of killing his parents. He was initially arrested Tuesday afternoon for suspicion DUI.
Investigators said after news broke of Shawn Pittman's parents’ deaths, several people saw him driving his mother's mini-van and called police.
“One call reported seeing Shawn Pittman in the minivan filling up with gas,” said OSBI spokesperson Brook Arbeitman.
State investigators said Pittman was living with his parents. Police were called to check on them when Shawn's mother, Pauletta, was a no show.
“When she didn’t come to work, a coworker called Stroud police to do a welfare check,” said Arbeitman.
Once at their home, police discovered Pauletta Pittman and her husband Mark dead inside.
“It's sad, it's a very sad situation, my heart breaks,” said neighbor Angi Jackson.
Their deaths have shaken up the small community.
“I’ve lived here for ten years and never seen anything like this,” said Jackson.
“In talking to some people yesterday, it's a small enough town that everybody knows everybody in some way or another,” said Arbeitman.
Within a matter of hours, once in custody, Shawn was upgraded from a person of interest to prime suspect.
“With a person of interest, they know something, maybe have seen something, but there's not enough evidence to name them at a suspect,” said Arbeitman.
He's now behind bars waiting to be formally charged.
“He was transported to Lincoln County Jail last night, and today is facing two charges of murder in the first degree,” said Arbeitman.
Neighbors are unsure of what triggered the murders of two seemingly kind people.
“We're neighbors, you wave and smile when you go by, things like that,” said Jackson.
