Oklahoma City Police Department is in the process for applying for a nearly half million dollar justice assistance grant that would help fund more cameras.
A public hearing for the grant is scheduled for today. If it's awarded, the grant would also fund a victim services coordinator position and a part-time sex offender registry program.
Oklahoma County, Del City, and Midwest City all propose to utilize Justice Assistance Grand funds for the purchase of equipment for law enforcement purposes.
For the OKCPD, the most controversial piece of equipment up for grabs is body cameras.
It's been three months the Oklahoma City police department pulled body cameras from the streets. The department currently has 100 cameras that aren't being used. The removal of those cameras came after the union filed a grievance claiming improper negotiation of body cam policies.
The public hearing is scheduled to start at City Hall at 8:30 a.m.
