OKC Police Investigating After Child Killed In Auto-Ped Crash
OKLAHOMA CITY - Police said the driver involved in an auto-pedestrian crash that killed a child near SW 59th and Blackwelder just before 5 p.m. Thursday, was detained as they continue to investigate.
As emergency crews responded to the crash, and Jim Gardner in Bob Mills SkyNews 9 flew overhead, the scene on the ground was gut wrenching.
A woman, who witnesses believed was the child's mother, was visibly devastated and in disbelief after what happened.
Police said a car was eastbound on the 1300 block of SW 59th. And there was a group of children playing on the side of the street. The speed limit in the area is 40 mph, according to police.
“A child from that group stepped into the roadway and was struck by a vehicle,” said Officer Travis Vernier with the Oklahoma City Police Department.
Jackelinne Diosdado, 14, and her mother were in the area when it happened.
“We came out of the store and saw the little kid on the ground. And we got scared. So then a lot of ambulances, a lot of cars, it was a lot of traffic,” she said. “The mom was crying really bad and we saw people helping him, but he wouldn’t wake up. He wouldn’t move.”
Fire officials said they performed CPR on him all the way to OU Medical Center. But the 5-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the hospital.
“It’s a difficult, heartbreaking situation. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and we’ll certainly do what we can to investigate what happened,” said Officer Vernier.
Detectives will likely have the initial crash report ready in the next few days after recreating the crash and looking at the vehicles black box. Investigators do not believe the driver was intoxicated.
