Good Samaritan Run Over Trying To Help Stranded Woman

A Good Samaritan stops to help a woman on the side of a dirt road, but his good deed takes a tragic turn. Despite that, Chris KuKuk is being called a hero.

On Wednesday, Oct. 26, Chris left his home around 8 p.m. to pick up his daughter in Morrison, Okla. He never made it. While driving down Brush Creek Rd. near Stillwater, Chris saw 25-year-old Cassie Renae Martin who desperately needed help.

Chris was only a few miles from his home before he saw Cassie flagging him down. It's a moment that seems to play over and over again in Chris's mind.

“He backed up to check on her, and she seemed frightened and he asked her what was going on,” said Chris' wife, Franky Kukuk.

Cassie handed Chris her cell phone that she was on at the time, talking to her grandmother trying to make her way home.

“And he talked to the grandma about where they could take her to them, and at that moment, he said she had collapsed and passed out face first,” said Franky.

Cassie's mother, Sherry Mullins-Martin, says her daughter was on dialysis, waiting for a kidney transplant and was feeling sick on the day of the accident. She says Cassie was leaving a friend's home on foot and lost her way.

“And he got out [of] the car, turned on the hazards, and was trying to wake her up and told the grandma, ‘Hold on, I see some lights coming,'” said Franky.

But those headlights heading directly towards them wasn't help arriving. Chris hoped it was, and began trying to wave them down, but they didn't stop.

“The vehicle didn't see them. I don't know what happened, but it hit him, threw him 20 feet, knocked him out of his shoes, broke four ribs. He's had a plate in this arm, pins in this one, had to have his ears stitched back,” said Franky.

Cassie didn't make it.

“Why an innocent young lady that was very very nice, she was beautiful had two beautiful kids that we know of. Here in one minute, gone the next,” said Chris.

Chris was flown to OU Medical Center.

“They was [sic] thankful that I stopped. They said that I was their hero. Like I said, I don't see myself as a hero. I was just a guy trying to help somebody else out,” said Chris.

Cassie leaves behind two young children, 6-year-old Carson and 4-year-old Alaina. No word yet on the driver that hit Cassie and Chris.

A GoFundMe account has been set up on the family's behalf.

Chris will have to have several surgeries and 24-hour care. He has no use of either of his arms right now. Chris and his wife Franky also have six children and are caring for their elderly grandfather.
