Firefighters say a man accidentally spread a fire while trying to put out the flames at his northwest Oklahoma City home early Thursday morning.
The man said he was awakened just after midnight when he heard a noise at his house near N.W. 7th and Council. Moments later, his smoke alarm sounded. The man said he saw flames on the floor and the edge of his bed.
The man attempted to put out the fire himself by dragging the mattress outside. Firefighters say when he did that, he unintentionally spread the flames throughout his house.
A neighbor called 911. Firefighters arrived quickly and put out the flames. Most of the fire damage was contained to the bedroom, but there was smoke damage throughout the home.
It's not known yet what caused the fire, but investigators say it may have been started by something electrical.
The man and his two dogs were not hurt.
