The Oklahoma Highway Patrol releases the identity of a suspected DUI driver who was fatally shot by a state trooper over the weekend.

According to OHP, 33-year-old Chris D. Mooneyham Jr. of Wellston was shot and killed after he attempted to run over a state trooper.

Trooper Jansen Idlett, 31, was working a special enforcement DUI shift near Tower and 8th Streets in Moore on Sunday, November 20. Around 2:00 a.m., Trooper Idlett noticed Mooneyham driving erratically. Police said when Idlett attempted to stop the driver, he took off and a short pursuit began.

During the pursuit, a passenger fled from Mooneyham's truck on foot. The passenger was captured and taken into custody.

OHP said Trooper Idlett was outside his car near the corner of 8th Street and Tower, when Mooneyham attempted to hit the trooper with his pickup.

Trooper Idlett then fired his gun at the suspect in an attempt to avoid being run over. The shot struck Mooneyham through his pickup. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Trooper Idlett is a 6-year veteran of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and works out of Cleveland County. He has been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending an investigation. The results of the investigation will be turned over to the Chief's office and the Cleveland County District Attorney for review.
