OKLAHOMA CITY -- A mother up in Edmond has a problem with the Pledge of Allegiance, or at least the version of it her middle school-aged son was required to learn.
As a class assignment, the students had to learn the Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish.
One student's parents were appalled at the idea and took their complaint to Edmond School District officials, who, after some consideration, allowed their son to complete a different assignment.
What I haven't mentioned is that this was an assignment for Spanish class.
It doesn't seem to have been any sidestep toward forced multi-culturalism.
I've frequently stated my belief that the English language is the common thread that will keep this country from fragmenting into competing ethnic communities, and I'm acutely aware when that common thread is being compromised.
But I don't see that here. It looks like just a Spanish assignment to me, I don't see it as an erosion of our American traditions.
