EDMOND, Oklahoma -- The murder of a popular homeless man, "Bicycle Bob," is still under investigation, and the suspect charged with the murder is behind bars, but a private investigator said police have the wrong man.

A private investigator, who represents another suspect in the case, Nickolas Kerr, said after reading every page of the police report, he believes there are problems with this case. Not only that, but he believes Connor Mason, the man accused of killing "Bicycle Bob" is not guilty.

"Someone was very mad at Bicycle Bob. That's a vicious murder. It's not, 'I'm having fun. Look what I did.' It's a vicious murder," said private investigator Bill Betts.

Betts said after reviewing 1,600 pages of police reports, he doesn't believe Mason killed Dwite Morgan, who is also known as Bicycle Bob.

"There are so many problems. It's almost scary because it doesn't make a lot of sense," Betts said.

Betts said some of the major problems regarding the case include the blood evidence surrounding Mason and the crime scene. He said he believes Mason cut off Bicycle Bob's finger to impress Heather Parker, another suspect in the case.

"He took a trophy to impress her. I don't think he killed somebody to impress her. He wasn't covered in blood," Betts said.

Another problem, according to Betts, was that the suspects and the victim all suffer from some type of mental illness.

"There is on all sides, Bicycle Bob is not normal. These people, a lot of them have a problem, emotional problems, drug problems, they have a lot of problems. Because of that, you can't rationalize what Connor Mason is thinking. You can't rationalize someone who has drug problems or mental problems because they'll do stuff that makes no sense," Betts said.

The private investigator said given the mental illnesses, there are many different versions of the story being told.

"If they convict Connor Mason because he told a story, they still haven't got a murderer. I believe there are two involved and they're still in Edmond," Betts said. "I wouldn't stick my neck out for Connor Mason if I didn't think there's something wrong with this."

Betts has worked a number of years as a private investigator and has also worked with several attorneys and several insurance companies around the state.

The lead prosecutor and Assistant District Attorney, Kevin Etherington, said at this stage, blood evidence is not crucial in finding the probable cause the judge has to make, and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is still working on a lot of the blood evidence.

Etherington also said nothing was said to him about Connor's mental illness, and he cannot comment on the hearsay.

More witnesses are slated to take the stand in the upcoming preliminary hearing scheduled for September.
