Civic Leader Hospitalized After Fire

Civic leader Berta Faye Rex was hospitalized after she was injured in a house fire early Thursday morning.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Civic leader Berta Faye Rex was hospitalized after she was injured in a house fire early Thursday morning.

Firefighters were called to Rex's home in the 11000 block of Quail Creek Road around 1 a.m. The fire started in the garage around the refrigerator. A cause has not been determined.

When firefighters arrived they found Rex unconscious in the kitchen. She had soot around her nose and mouth.

Rex told firefighters that she heard a noise in the garage and investigated and saw a small fire. She backed the car out, got her dog out and went the neighbor's house, and then she went back in to put the fire out.

The fire caused $154,248 in damage.

Rex was given the lifetime achievement award from the United Way in January.
