As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, staff at A New Leaf are undergoing specialized training designed to equip them with skills to support clients facing both developmental disabilities and mental health challenges.
More than 80% of A New Leaf’s clients experience a mental health condition alongside their disability — a combination that can lead to behavioral challenges and limit their independence and employment opportunities.
To address these needs, the organization is investing in front-line staff with intensive training in mental health first aid.
On Tuesday, May 20, and Wednesday, May 21, A New Leaf’s program staff will take part in two full days of continuing education.
Certified mental health professionals will lead the sessions, which are designed to help staff identify and respond to early signs of mental health or substance use challenges.
While A New Leaf primarily serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, the new training is not limited to that population. It aims to strengthen how staff interact with anyone, including coworkers, family members or the general public who might be in crisis.
“This training will help our front-line staff become better at noticing the signs and symptoms of someone experiencing a mental health or substance abuse challenge,” said Chief Operations Officer Maranda Figueroa. “Staff will learn how to assess, listen, give reassurance, encourage help and self-help.”
