Retailers across the U.S. are placing limits on egg purchases as a nationwide shortage continues to drive up prices. The ongoing bird flu outbreak is being blamed for the supply constraints.
Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Sprout's, and some Costco locations are among the grocery stores shoppers say are restricting the number of eggs customers can buy.
Certain Costco stores have implemented a three-carton limit, according to customers on social media.
Some shoppers have taken to platforms like TikTok and X, formerly Twitter, to share videos of long lines forming outside grocery stores as people try to buy eggs before they sell out.

Others have posted images of signs placed by retailers, informing customers of purchase limits due to high demand and supplier shortages.
Egg prices have more than doubled since the summer of 2023 as the bird flu outbreak continues to disrupt supply chains. With millions of chickens being culled to prevent further spread of the virus, experts say the shortage could persist in the coming months.
