Former President Donald Trump has made the announcement in a post on Truth Social as GOP delegates were formally voting to name him the party's presidential nominee.

"After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio," the former president wrote.

The Republican Governors Association (RGA), published a statement on Trump's decision to select Vance as his running mate in the 2024 presidential election.

"Senator J.D. Vance has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to Ohioans and the American people by advocating for policies that will restore America’s manufacturing strength, secure our borders to prevent the scourge of fentanyl, and bring meaningful reform to education," said RGA Chair and Tennessee Governor Bill Lee. "Senator Vance’s inspiring story resonates with millions of Americans who identify with the adversity he faced and overcame, and it’s abundantly clear that he cares deeply about working tirelessly with President Trump to secure a prosperous future for all."

The office of Congressman Josh Brecheen also released a statement on Trump's selection.

"Senator JD Vance is committed to securing our border and putting American citizens first. It has been an honor to work with Senator Vance during my first term in office and I look forward to continuing to work with him in his new role,” Brecheen said.

Trump made his selection for vice president earlier on Monday, and Vance will be introduced on the floor of the convention shortly after 4:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon, head of a vote to formalize his selection. Vance, Tim Scott of South Carolina, Marco Rubio of Florida and former North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum were believed to be on Trump's shortlist to get the nod, but the first-term senator from Ohio ultimately won out.
