A metro woman said she witnessed a vehicle later involved in a deadly head-on collision speed past her early Saturday morning.

The collision resulted in one man’s death. Another man was seriously injured.

“It could have been us and it's just real sad,” witness Sandra Masters said.

Masters was driving home in the center lane with her boyfriend on Interstate 40 near Peebly Road when they saw headlights barreling towards them. The driver, 37-year-old Matthew Havard, was going the wrong way.

“You don't even realize something like that could take your life so quick,” Masters said.

Masters said if she would have been driving in the left lane, as she usually does, she would have collided head-on into Havard's vehicle.

“It was very scary,” Masters said. “Kind of makes you want to say your prayers before you get on the road because you never know.”

Masters learned hours later just how fortunate she was.

“Two or three minutes later, I think, is probably when he hit that other driver,” Masters said.

According to investigators, Havard crashed into a van just before 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

Havard, a Seminole resident, drove head-on into 22-year-old Jordan Cutter of Oklahoma City. This is the second time in two weeks a fatality crash was caused by a wrong-way driver.

“It's sad, it's scary and I don't know it just feels like that happens more often than it should be,” Masters said.

Troopers said both vehicles caught on fire. Harvard died at the scene while Cutter was transported to OU Medical Center in serious condition.

OHP has not determined why Havard was driving in the wrong direction. Havard’s condition is also under investigation.
