A powerful storm that had stalled over western Nebraska and South Dakota is moving northeastward, after dumping snow across the northern Plains.
Wind-blown snow closed major highways and stranded motorists.
South Dakota got the worst of the snowfall, with 30 inches reported in the Black Hills. The storm system also generated tornadoes. Much of western South Dakota was shut down Tuesday for a second day. Visibility was so poor, officials pulled snowplows off the roads.
North Dakota saw more than a foot of snow in some areas, leading to fears of more flooding later.
Conditions are improving in northwest Nebraska after a blizzard dropped as much as 10 inches of snow in the area.
In southeastern Montana, crews will resume searching for stranded motorists in the morning.
In extreme northwest Wyoming, road and rescue crews reached stranded motorists, including a family of three.
