May is bicycle safety awareness month. Make sure you follow these rules for both cyclists and motorists.

Rules for cyclists

  • Ride with the traffic not against it
  • Ride on the street, not the sidewalk
  • Ride as near to the right-hand side of the roadway as is safe - new OKC ordinance
  • Signal when turning or stopping
  • Every bicyclist is an individual, on group rides each must stop for traffic signals and signs

Rules for motorists

  • Give cyclists at least 3 feet when passing - now law in OKC as of April
  • Wait for a cyclist to pass before turning right or left
  • Check for bikes a driveways, crosswalks, bike paths as well as at street intersections
  • Always check your blind spot and signal before turning
  • Watch for cyclists who may be "wrong way riding" against traffic at intersections
