OKLAHOMA CITY -- There is a safety concern for many parents with school age children. More than a dozen schools in the metro area are operating without crossing guards at key locations.

School crossing guards brave the weather and the not-so-patient drivers to help little ones walk across safely day after day.

Most crossing guards are volunteers and the program director said those volunteers are hard to find. She said they've already hired 6 crossing guards and are looking for 13 more people to fill the open spots.

"Our concern is for the children," said the volunteer program coordinator, Francene Thomas. "Those locations we haven't been able to find crossing guards for, those children are in danger when they cross."

The following is a list of schools that are in need of crossing guards:

Gatewood – 1821 N.W. 21st Street

Hayes – 6900 S. Byers

Heronville – 1240 S.W. 29th Street (2 Positions)

Kaiser – 3103 Lyon Boulevard

Monoroe – 4810 N. Linn Avenue (2 Positions)

Parker – 12700 N.E. 42nd Street

Parmelee – 6700 S. Hudson Avenue

Prairie Queen – 6609 S. Blackwelder Avenue

Rancho Village – 1401 Johnston Drive

Wilson – 2215 N. Walker Avenue

Harvest Hills (Putnam City) – 8215 N.W. 104th Street

Interested applicants can visit those schools or call the Bricktown Police Department at 405-297-1142.
