OKLAHOMA CITY -- A grant could allow Oklahoma City to put more firefighters on the force this year, but there is a catch.
Last year the Oklahoma City Fire Department cut 29 positions. The S.A.F.E.R grant could save those jobs this year if the department decides to apply for a federal grant.
If the department is awarded the money, the grant will pay to keep the 29 eliminated positions. However, Oklahoma City has to guarantee those jobs for a second year, which some leaders said could be a risky proposition considering the unstable economy.
The city has until September 17 to apply for the grant money.
