Logan Co. Authorities Locate Mother & Newborn Who Tested Positive For Meth

The search ended Friday night on for an infant who tested positive for meth when he was born at Baptist Medical Center.

Logan County authorities confirmed the family of Nichole Kerschner cooperated with authorities and assisted with locating the baby. The infant has been placed in DHS custody.

Authorities said the woman gave birth to the baby on Feb. 12 and was discharged three days later.

Investigators said Nichole Kerschner gave birth to a baby boy who tested positive for meth.

Investigators said the incident was reported to DHS, but before the baby could be placed into protective custody, Kerschner and the infant were released from the hospital.

They also said Kerschner used a fictitious name to deliver the baby.

Detectives believe it may have had something to do with insurance and said it is not the first time someone has checked into a hospital using a different name.

Integris released a statement about the ordeal saying they have "a formal admitting process in place for all patients, and that process was followed with this patient. At the time of admission there were no allegations of wrong doing by the patient. Mother and baby were discharged appropriately and in accordance with our policies. The security of our patients was never in question."

The security of the baby, however, was in question, and detectives said they believed Kerschner was using meth and breastfeeding the boy.

“It is possible that the female could be charged with some sort of child neglect,” Logan County Detective Greg Valencia said.
