Saturday night's tornado left streets on the east side of Claremore littered with uprooted trees and branches tangled in power lines. The city is without power with a lot of cleanup ahead.

"I was laying in bed and when I woke up I thought it was thunder rumbling," Claremore resident, Buddy Robertson said. "Then I went outside and saw the trees down on both sides and figured it must've been a tornado."

Robertson is a lifelong Claremore resident and says he’s never seen anything like this in his hometown.

"As far as I know and the rumor has always been a tornado has never touched down in Claremore," he said.

Saturday night's tornado did significant damage to homes and power lines as well as a horse race track and RV park east of the town.

Rogers County Sheriff Scott Walton says everyone is coming together to help.

"We're blessed on a day like this we have help from everybody,” Walton said.

He says the number one priority is cleanup.

"If you got a neighbor or someone that you can go and check on maybe get their driveway clear then do that,” he said.

Nearly every street on the east side of Claremore sees trees completely uprooted, exposing the earth below, including Robertson’s home.

"I was grateful because it didn't go through the house, so I was really pretty lucky," he said describing the tree that fell on his home during the storm.

He says he’s confident the city will come together.

"Oh yeah Claremore’s a great city," he said.

"When people talk about small communities and Oklahoma values and stuff like that. Nothing says it louder than people's actions," Walton added.

Over 20 injuries have been reported in Claremore, but no fatalities. The American Red Cross has a shelter at the Memorial Heights Baptist Church on West Will Rogers Blvd.
