Bethany city leaders are trying to cut down on bogus 911 calls.
Officials are considering a new ordinance that would create a $500 fine for misuse of 911.
"We're not trying to scold the public, with the exception of those who continue to abuse it," Police Chief Neal Troutman said.
The chief said first-time offenders will be warned and educated about the importance of saving 911 for emergencies only.
State law already makes bogus 911 calls a crime, but by making this a municipal law it will be quicker and easier to prosecute offenders in a city court, officials said.
