Wednesday was a special day for the family of a Pottawatomie County deputy, who was shot eight times in the line of duty.

The McLoud Police Department presented Deputy Garey Knoles with a gift from donors across Oklahoma for his incredible sacrifice while on the job. He was presented more than $10,000.

After being shot while responding to a domestic disturbance on Oct. 29 in Bethel Acres, Knoles underwent multiple surgeries. He recently returned home.

His wife said they are thankful for the donation, and she believes it's a miracle he survived.

“Never in a million years when I got there, did I think that he would pull through or that he would make it,” said Eleanor Knoles. “I tell him a million times, he had a thousand angels watching over him.”

After receiving his gift, Garey Knoles recalled what went through his mind during the incident.

"Everything went through my mind, everything that could happen to me, could happen to my family,” said Garey Knoles. “But I calmed it back down, I just knew it wasn't going to happen. I wasn't going to let him kill me. Once I calmed down, I could focus on the situation and do what I had to do to get out of there."

Despite everything that happened, he said the first thing he wants to do after he fully recovers is get back on the job.

“My physical therapist said roughly one year for recovery," Garey Knoles said. “Then I’m going back to work.”
