Tuesday at 11 a.m. the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices is set to meet to discuss a recommendation for kids 5 to 11 years old to receive the COVID vaccine.

If the CDC approves Pfizers vaccine Tuesday, kids could start getting their shots as soon as this week.

The FDA has already authorized the use of the Pfizer dose in kids after a multi-step testing process.

State and local health departments are already preparing for the CDC sign off.

News 9 analyst Scott Mitchell spoke with a board-certified internal medicine and infectious disease doctor about parent’s vaccine hesitancy.

"Think about your child as a member of society and being potentially a vector for disease to someone who may not be able to mount the same immune response that other kids can," said Dr. David Chansolme M.D.

The Tulsa Health Department is also preparing to make sure parents are informed about getting their children vaccinated.

"How can we message to parents so that we don't scare them, but we tell them the truth and give them information that is factual so hopefully it is a matter of looking at the facts and taking the hyperbole out of it," said Bruce Dart, the executive director for the Tulsa Health Department.

Pfizer recently announced that their vaccine is more than 90% effective at preventing COVID in children.
