Detectives at the Harrah Police Department are working to identify two suspects caught on camera installing skimmers on several gas pumps.
It happened about 4 a.m. on October 14 at Linns Shoppette in Harrah.
The driver of a 2012 or 2014 Grey Honda Pilot stayed in the vehicle while a white male got out of the vehicle, opened all four gas pumps and installed the skimmers.
Aprea Rea said she got gas at Linns Shoppette on a Thursday. By Friday, fraudulent transactions popped up in her account.
"Its very aggravating, very aggravating,” said Rea.
Including fees, she’s out over $300 while other victims are reportedly out thousands, Rea said.
“If it wasn’t for COVID relief funds, we would not have got groceries that weekend,” said Rea. “It took me over a week, almost 10 days, just to get my money back from my bank since it’s a prepaid card.”
The Harrah Police Department took action after finding several social media complaints.
Police said the owner of Linns Shoppette didn’t report the crime due to fears of losing business.
The high-tech Bluetooth skimmers used, easily bought online, are useless to investigators. Once information was taken from them, it is automatically wiped clean.
“If these store owners or managers would take just an hour out of their day once a week, go out and open the pumps up and check them to look for these, that would eliminate a lot of this,” said Harrah police Chief Gary Morgan.
Police said it is very important for both store owners and possible victims of gas pump skimmers to report it to your local law enforcement agency.
Make sure to closely inspect a gas pump and card reader for anything suspicious before getting gas.
